Simple to build fun to fly . . .

The SwordFish flying wing plane was designed to be simple to print, build, and fly, requiring a minimum number of parts.
Thanks to its combined fuselage-wing design, it is very easy to take off (just throw it by hand like a standard plane with a fuselage and tail) and, due to its relatively large wings, the take-off speed is slower (depending on your build), making it suitable for beginners to 3D printed planes, especially wings. However, it still requires some RC plane experience.


The plane consists of only 8 large main segments (3 segments for each wing and 2 segments for the fuselage) plus a few smaller parts and covers.
The largest STL segment is smaller than 195 mm, allowing it to be printed on small 3D printers when positioned correctly (190x190x195 mm).
To build this plane, you only need one carbon tube (or any other lightweight 8mm x 500mm tube), thin bars to support the elevons, and align segments of the plane together, along with some strong plastic glue. That is all. Of course, to make it fly, you will need electronics and components. A list of all materials and components used to build this plane is provided later on this page.


The plane is very stable and offers room for CG adjustments to accommodate a variety of motors with mounting hole patterns: 12, 16, and 19mm, ranging from 20 up to 100g, and also a variety of batteries up to 500g (if they fit in the battery bay).

Testing Phase 1 Has Ended

Dear FPV or non-FPV pilots!
The testing phase of this plane has ended, and we would like to share with you what's next.
During the testing, we encountered some issues that are hard to predict or simulate using CFD, especially for wings with complicated shapes and structures.
However, we also have good news: the plane exceeded some of our expectations.


  • + We even exceeded calculated efficiency during testing, achieving almost 1:40 hours of flight time.
  • + The plane is very quiet until it is really close.
  • + It is easy to print and build.
  • + The structure is strong and can withstand some rough landings, except for the front part of the fuselage.

  • - The plane is slightly nose-heavy, even with the battery in the most backward position; it needs to be redesigned.
  • - Space for electronics is limited; we will try to create more space, especially above the Flight Controller (FC).
  • - The front part of the fuselage may crack during hard landings, we will reinforce this part of the plane.
  • - The recommended motor is unnecessarily big and powerful for this plane. Using a smaller motor can achieve greater efficiency, but in this case, the plane with a lighter and smaller motor will be nose-heavy, which needs to be addressed as mentioned previously.

Unfortunately, we decided not to continue with redesigning this plane due to a better and much more interesting new project of a big, 1.6-meter-wide, and professionally designed wing. But you can still freely download this plane, it flies really well, although it has a few issues addressed above but nothing huge.

Main features of SwordFish UAV

 

Easy to build

This 3D printable flying wing consist only from few bigger main pieces. It is easy to print almost without supports and even easier to assemble without any special skills parts or tools. All you need is listed in: Required build material.

 

Simple to launch

Flying wing planes are usually difficult to hand-launch, however this combined design fuselage with wings brings advantages of both, the fuselage which has enough space for the equipment and simplicity of flying wings.

 

No need special parts

This flying wing does not require any special parts or tools to be build. All you need is just good plastic glue and simple spar to support wings which may be from the Carbon fibre or wood. That is basically all you need.

 

Low noise

In combination with right battery voltage, motor KV and propeller size and pitch you may achieve extremely silent flying wing thanks to the prolonged tail where is attached the motor which reduces propeller noise.

 

Stable

For the flying wings stability may be issue due to the lack of tail and vertical stabilizer. However all those drawbacks could be eliminated with proper design and in combination with small but effective vertical surfaces.

 

Fit many components

Plane has been designed so that you can mount on it variety of the components. From different motor sizes, weights and mounting patterns to different FPV systems, batteries, FC, sensors and so on.

 

Customizable

Plane contains couple of optional configurations, for example you can fly it without the winglets or with the camera mounted on top of the fuselage to get interesting views.

 

Efficient

We try to build all our planes as efficient as possible. Sometimes however compromise must be done in order to simplicity and construction stiffness.

Cargo capabilities

Cargo compartment is mainly used for the battery, is minimum 46 x 46 x 115 mm big.

It is capable of carryng mass ranging from 100* to 500 g.
